I recently found out that I have an L5 herniated disc. I’ve been following my doctor’s orders and taking the meds. But the pain has gotten increasingly worse and it’s clear it’s the mattress that’s not helping. So, I want to buy a new one. But there are so many, I wanted to at least have an idea. Any suggestions?
Years ago, they used to recommend getting a hard mattress. Now they’ve discovered that getting a hard mattress creates pressure points and closes off blood flow. I would recommend getting something in the middle. Not very hard, not very soft. Although there are lots off great quality innerspring mattresses available, I would consider looking at Latex or Memory foam.

I went to my doctor after about a week of pain in my neck. He diagnosed me with a pinched nerve, and prescribed me Vicodin, Flexeril, and Prednozone. It’s been about 4 days since I’ve been on these medications and they only seem to knock me out, making me sleep all day, not helping with the pain.
If in the end these don’t help, what more can a doctor do for me?
I definitely agree with the last person, but I have not had much luck with chiropractors. Perhaps you should go see a physical therapist. They can do massage to ease the pain and aid in strengthening your neck. There are different therapies that both doctors can do. Yes, look outside the box. Get off of those meds!
I am a student and read a _lot_, but reading in any position – sitting, reclining, in bed, in a chair, everywhere – usually gives me awful neck pain. I think someone should invent a book stand or suspended book holder to preserve people’s neck muscles. Suggestions?
geez you sound like me.. maybe you can lay in bed with one of those new pillow neck supports and then put the book on your chest of in front of you ..if you find something that works let me know i think i have the same problem
Im interested in being a chiropractor and i am currently majoring in biology. however, i was curious to know what other possible majors i could check out primarily because biology is just a rather difficult major.
Also what are some really good chiropractic colleges out there? Right now im interested in Palmer, but it seems rather expensie.
Chiropractors are anti-scientific quacks. Don’t waste your time.
If you want to study real medicine with some aspects of vertebral manipulation, consider going to a School of Osteopathy and become an Osteopathic Physician.
postscript:
Chiropractors like to advertise themselves as "back doctors/specialists", but rarely let patients know about their true beliefs. Chiropraxy has nothing to do with modern science or medicine. Chiropractors – at least those who are termed Palmer "straights" – believe that all illness is caused by blockages in the spine – what they call subluxations (magic – because nobody can see them). These chiropractors claim to cure disease by "unblocking" the spine. On slow news days, newspapers and TV stations use to take kids with ear infection to chiropractors, who would often prescribe an expensive series of spinal manipulations for the kid.
Chiropractors who reject or downplay the Palmer "subluxation" orthodoxy are called "mixers". They’re the ones you see at "health fairs" waving refrigerator magnets above patients to align their spines and remove impurities in the blood – and lighten the patients’ wallets….
I’m only 14 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing a little bit of sciatica since my 10th week. It usually doesn’t last for very long but when it does I can’t even walk. I was just wondering if anyone knows of any ways of relieving the pain, and when it should go away. I know it’s not from the baby right now but probably my insides moving around. Any similar experiences? How did you get rid of it?
I had that problem during my last pregnancy and found resting with my legs elevated about my hips helped as well as warm (not hot) baths and heat packs. Try doing gentle stretches and yoga, but be sure to have your doctors okay before participating in any exercise!
I am 45 year old. And i work 10-12 hors a day. I have very minor pain in my lower back . Is there any reccomendation or any exercise i can do to help it get better.
For the pain use ice for fifteen minutes out of an hour whenever you can. Stretching is going to help but when you are standing or even sitting squeeze the buttocks together as if someone is attempting to pull a hundred dollar bill from between the cheeks. This will help to level the pelvis and reduce pain. Lie on the floor on your back and slowly bring one knee up to the chest. Bear hug it into the chest and hold for ten seconds. Relax but don’t let go of the leg and repeat the pull four more times. Slowly return the leg to the floor and do the opposite leg. When the last repetition has been done do not return the leg to the floor but bring the opposite leg up and pull both of them into the chest. Hold for ten seconds and relax but hold both legs. Repeat that cycle four more times. At the end of the last repetition bring one leg down to the floor and put the foot flat on the floor with the knee bent at 90 degrees. Bring the opposite leg down in the same way and rock the knees to one side attempting to put the knees on the floor with your shoulders remaining on the floor. Return to the starting position and then go to the opposite side. This can be done as many times as you want. Do this series twice a day and more if possible.
Back pain is bad making walking very difficult. Patient is a pensioner, with no one to help, is unable to get to see doctor and doctors will not make house calls. What should he/she do.
There are many reasons for back pain. There is very little information about the patient. I understand that the patient is an aged person. Does he work hard or sit around on a couch? It is also important to know the patient’s mattress condition as a poor quality mattress can also cause back pain. Too much sitting, lack of exercise, improper lifting, poor posture, and/or obesity can cause back pain also.
Arthritis is one of the most common reasons for back pain. The type of arthritis most often seen in the spine is Osteoarthritis-sometimes called Degenerative Joint Disease. This is a progressive disease that is most common in the hands but is often found in the bones of the back as well. This condition is seen on an x-ray and is more common as you age. It is thought that if you maintain normal back function and motion with certain exercises, stretches and regular back adjustments, arthritis can be prevented or postponed.
Spinal Stenosis is an age-related disease where the openings in the spine that the nerves come out of become smaller. This often causes pain running down the leg (sciatica), which makes walking difficult. This condition is found with x-ray, CT scan, or MRI. This can be a difficult problem to treat successfully. Choosing the right doctor is essential for this condition.
Looking for sites on back pain relief exercises as well.
Keep your back as straight as possible. Good posture is key to preventing a sore, stiff back. Massage is fantastic to relieve back pain — use some natural oil for greater effect. Regular exercise helps loosen the muscles & joints and maintain body flexibility. This is important to prevent sudden cramps and lower back pain.
I had a herniated disc in my lower back for about 4 months now.I wanted to know can would it still be ok if me and my girlfriend had sex? Will we have to have to cut down on sex? Will sex make the pain and the herniated disc more worse?
I’m afraid to say that sexual intercourse will most definatly make the pain of the injury worse and possibly even actually cause more physical damage to the disk/nerve dramatically increasing the pain for an extended period of time as well as obviously.
As for weather you are willing to put up with the pain and the high risk of further injury to your disk is of course totally your decision, make it wisely though (you can’t undo further damage anymore than you can undo the damage you have already done).
