can anyone explain the process and exactly what happens to the nervous system etc. i know i have to have a local anaesthetic first before the pain killer one … does it numb a particular area or can it effect other parts of the body ?

You will be fine…I have had these before and they work great…any pain you feel which wont last long (a few seconds) and will be more like a big sting from a needle will be well worth the relief you get.
It will numb just the area surrounding the bad disc .

If its the needle under CT guidance they will lie you face-down on the CT table and inject the numbing stuff then put the needle in …take a picture to see if the needle is in the right place then either re-position the needle and re-scan or push the needle in then take it out…all over…
It doesnt take long really
