On July 5th 2011, I had discectomy surgery L4. When I woke from surgery and was moved to my room, my Dr come in to check on me. I told him my sciatic nerve pain in my left leg was gone. I was just sore from the surgery. So I was discharged to go home the following morning. So three days go by and I felt no pain from sciatic nerve at all.
Then saturday came. I woke up in great amount of pain (same as sciatic pain) running down my left leg to my foot. Leg felt heavy weak and pain was off the charts (and still is). I called my Dr and he told me it cant be sciatic pain because he cut away the hernia that was pushing on my sciatic nerve. He went on to say its muscular pain and I am mistaking it for sciatic pain.
WTF!?!? Anyone thats had sciatica knows what that pain is like. ITS NOT MUSCULAR PAIN!!!
So ive been dealing with it since last saturday. Pain is the same and I cant deal with it much longer.
My upper torso leans to the right when im standing up, there is a large lump under the 3 inch incision, and feels like im laying on a folded rag or something when lay on my back. Its hell to just get out of bed. Ive told my Dr all thats wrong and he and his staff tell me “its ok you will stop hurting soon enough”… I have nothing for the pain tylenol doesnt do shit for me, and I am allergic to NSAIDS. Oh yeah he hasnt done an xray ct scan mri or anything to see if maybe something is wrong. I know my body!!! Ive worked in MEDICAL field long enough to know when something is wrong. You think I should get referral to a diffrent neurosurgion? Thats what im thinking…. Just want advise from anyone else that knows about discectomy and sciatica.
Thanks, Serious answers only please.
back pain and sciatica?
Dec 19
Hi I have experienced during 6 years back pain and these last 2 years sciatica. The pain is so awful that I can not walk or stand or sleep. I have been taking all the pain killers and had to do two epidurals. The first one was more successful than the last one 10 days ago. I don’t have the same pain now but still it is there. I still have to take painkillers from time to time. I am scared to do the surgery but was told if I don’t do it I will suffer all my life. Do you think so. Did you experience the same thing, if you did the surgery where and how long it took you to go back to your regular activities, I need to take care of my kids, I have no help.

L4 / L5 herniated- MRI. It’s been about a year but the Dr.’s do not seem to think surgery is the answer- can walk 1-2 miles a day…mostly only sore in the am before walking. Want to incorporate core strengthening excercises (sits ups/stretches) but is there a proper sequence that should be followed? E.g. Walk first then stretch and do sit ups or do sit ups and stretches first? Does anyone recommend any excercises? Been following the McKenzie method…by far and away, the most recommended movement seems to be lying prone (face down) and and pressing up onto elbows and then hands to make a dramatic curve in the spine (accentuating the Lordosis- surve of the back). Made an appointment with a Neurologist- just want to keep an eye on Sciatica nerve root compression- occasionally get a little tingling in leg/foot which is not good- especially after strenous stretching- really do not want surgery–don’t want drop foot syndrome either- PLEASE HELP BY OFFERING AS MUCH ADVISE AS POSSIBLE- LONG INFORMATIVE REPLIES WELCOME! THANK YOU!!!!

I have Decompression Back Surgery set for the 7th. I am kind of starting to freak out a little bit. A little history on me before I ask the final question. I started having horrible back and leg pain after I had my daughter 5 1/2 years ago. My doctor told me then that it was Sciatica and that it will usually go away now that the baby isn’t there pushing on my nerves. As the year went by and we became pregnant with our son. I noticed the pain was getting way worse then before. Still I was told it was sciatica. After 3 years of being told it was sciatica my husband finally convinced me to meet with a spine specialist. I did so for the first time in August of 2009. At the time we didn’t know what we were dealing with so he ordered a bunch of x-rays and mri’s. All they showed were degenerative disk in my L2 and L3 as well as a cyst on my facet joints. We treated the facet joints with injections and finally after realizing it wasn’t working he decided to burn the nerves around the joints. I was pain free for a couple of weeks and was so happy with the results. Then out of no where the pain started back only it was worse and this time my back was killing me as well. I had another MRI that showed a Nerve Sheath Tumor in my L5 S1 area. He ordered a 2nd MRI with contrast to make sure we weren’t dealing with any sort of cancer. Thankfully it came back clean. It was just a sheath tumor that had grown into my nerve root. The only course of treatment at the time was injections “He didn’t want to jump into surgery right away” The first nerve block worked like a charm. I was pain free for a month!! Then the pain started coming back the 2nd and 3rd injection gave me no relief at all in fact I think I am in more pain now then before. I met back with the doctor last Thursday to figure out what our next move was going to be. His suggestion was decompression surgery in the L5 S1 area. I am ok with having to have surgery if it is going to help, but the way he was talking it wasn’t that big of a surgery and I would be back up and around the next day. In fact I would go home the same day. However everything I am finding on line says opposite of what he told me. What is decompression surgery? How major/minor of a surgery is it? And what is the recovery time? Also what could be causing cyst/tumors in my back area?
The way he described the surgery was like this. He showed me the skeleton that all doctors have just about and pointed to the bones in the lumbar area that the nerves run through and said that the tumor is on the nerve which is keeping it from passing through the whole in the bone. So he is going to go in through a 1-2 in incision and make the whole in the bone bigger by shaving off the bone until the tumor can pass through easily. He used a pencil and a toothbrush as an example or more a visual I guess. The pencil is small then a tooth brush so therefor a toothbrush would not be able to fit in the same hole a a pencil. So his goal is to make the hole big enough for the toothbrush and pencil to both fit through without bumping or rubbing the walls “bones”
was hoping to get an opinion. herniated a disc 2 yrs ago. got sciatica as a result that progressively got worse to the pt where i needed surgery. have been pain free for a yr, but 2 wks ago, pulled my back again golfing. the back pain is gone, but i feel the all too familiar pinching sensation in the upper-left buttocks. no pain going down my leg yet, but this is how it started last time so would like to seek treatment as soon as possible. i tried medication, physical therapy, accupuncture & epideral injections last time to no avail so had to get surgery as a last resort. this time, i’m wondering if i should try chiropractic treatment as it was the only treatment i didn’t try last time. however, i’ve heard mix things about it both personally & online, so if anyone can share their experience or expertise as it relates to herniated discs & sciatica, i’d appreciate it.
